Butoh Workshop with Holger Endres

Who are you?
I am Holger Endres, 52 years old, I live and work in Mannheim. I studied Butoh dance and performance art as well as painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe.

What do you do?
In addition to my painting, I am always working in theater and performance and have been giving workshops for 15 years in which I expand my experience and artistic work with participants. Starting from Butoh dance and performance art, I developed exercises and improvisations with which I work in the workshop.

What will I learn in the course?

Development of confidence and self-esteem

Sensitivity for time and movement

Perception exercises / presence work

Working with one's own imagination

Exploring personal and new movements

Recognize space

What do I need to bring?
Comfortable clothes, food and drink.

What else do I need to know?
It is important to me to create an atmosphere in which artistic thought and action can emerge. My workshops do not involve meeting targets or learning a particular technique. For me it is much more about the possibility to perceive oneself concentrated within an artistic context and within a group and not to have to evaluate this. I find it exciting to work performatively with people. The moment to surprise oneself, to follow attentively the things that arise and to perceive them, broadens my horizon and I think that of my workshop participants as well.

I have been working as a painter, performer and choreographer for 18 years. The gallery Bernd Kugler presents my work internationally in solo and group exhibitions and most recently with a solo presentation in 2022 at the Spark Art Fair in Vienna.

In 2020 / 2021 I received a scholarship from the state of Baden Württemberg to the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

Before and during my studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, I was intensively involved with Butoh dance. I took classes with Minako Seki, Yumiko Yoshioka and Ishii Mitsutaka and was able to learn a lot about the philosophy, techniques and working methods of Butoh dance. An intensive and exciting time, which has its influence on my painting and performative works until today.

Equally exciting and intense at that time was my interest in performance art. I founded the performance group Hirsch 22 and began to work with the group and my own performances at the interface of visual art and theater. With the director Rainer Escher, I began to integrate my performance work into his plays in 2010. A challenge, because the processes, the rehearsals and the final product were always tied to the play, the literary basis.

Under Collaboration Patrycja German / Holger Endres another artistic collaboration emerged from 2009 - 2020. With Patrycja German I researched intimate moments in time capsules and the balancing of the presence of two people, in performance, video and photography.
